BattleCry 2006: Recruiting Christian youth for a religious war tomorrow.

Go read the three columns submitted to Truthdig by Sunsara Taylor on her experiences attending the three day Christian evangelical youth movement known as BattleCry:

If you’ve been waiting to get alarmed until the Christian fascist movement started filling stadiums with young people and hyping them up to do battle in “God’s army,” wait no longer.

In recent weeks, BattleCry, a Christian fundamentalist youth movement, has attracted more than 25,000 people to mega-rally rock concerts in San Francisco and Detroit, and this weekend it plans to fill Wachovia Stadium in Philadelphia.

The leaders of BattleCry claim that their religion and values are under attack, but amid spectacular light shows, Hummers, Navy SEALs and military imagery on stage, it is BattleCry that has declared war on everyone else. Its leader, Ron Luce, insists: “This is war. And Jesus invites us to get into the action, telling us that the violent—the ‘forceful’ ones—will lay hold of the kingdom.”

Here’s page 2 and page 3 and I highly suggest you read them all. It’ll probably scare the shit out of you.

There is a definite attempt taking place by the Christian Evangelicals to get ‘em while their young and get them ready to literally shed blood in the fight to turn America into a theocracy. This is where we’re going to see the next round of domestic terrorism come forth and our President is fully behind the effort all the way:

This was the letter that opened the event. Its author was George W. Bush.  Yes, the president of the United States sent a letter of support, greeting, prayer and encouragement to the BattleCry event held at Wachovia Spectrum Stadium in Philadelphia on May 12. Immediately afterward, a preacher took the microphone and led the crowd in prayer. Among other things, he asked the attendees to “Thank God for giving us George Bush.”

On his cue, about 17,000 youths from upward of 2,000 churches across America and Canada directed their thanks heavenward in unison.

Throughout the three and a half hours of BattleCry’s first session, I thought of only one analogy that fit the experience: This must have been what it felt like to watch the Hitler Youth, filled with self-righteous pride, proclaim the supremacy of their beliefs and their willingness to shed blood for them.

You’d like to think this kind of shit can’t happen in America, but there’s no reason it can’t. Who’s to say that someday this country will be the one all the other countries are banding together to defeat? If these people have their way that day may come sooner than later.

Meg, please explain what Jesus (an unmarried Jew of 34 years of age)was doing in the Garden of Gesthemane with at least 12 other young men the whole night. And, according to Mark 14:51-52, one of the young men with Jesus had only “a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him: and he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.” Don’t forget, it was a cold night (Mark 14:54). What were those boys doing in that Garden??? tongue wink

God didnt want Abraham to kill his son. God just wanted to see how much faith Abraham had in him. God didnt want Isaac to die, God just wanted to see if Abraham loved him more than he loved his son. God wanted Abraham to give Isaac up in his heart, and he did.

Megiddo, I really pity your wife.

First of all, Sadie is no lady as proven with her discription of her homosexual boyfriends escapades in her above posts. Second of all, dude, when you threaten physical violence over the internet, it just makes you look like big fat, porno watching, lardbutt, that couldnt move quick enough to get out of his own way.

Megiddo, Gen. 22:2 “...Take now they son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.”

God didnt want Abraham to kill his son. God just wanted to see how much faith Abraham had in him. God didnt want Isaac to die, God just wanted to see if Abraham loved him more than he loved his son. God wanted Abraham to give Isaac up in his heart, and he did.

So, when the Babble needs to be interpreted, we interpret, but when it suits our needs it needs to be followed to the letter??? surprised

leguru, a mob tried to grab the boy in the linen. The mob was sent out to arrest Jesus. They came with Judas. If you would have read Mark 14:17-50, you would have known why they were out there with Jesus but I have to wonder what kind of perverted mind you have to crop up a theory like that, wait are you Sadies boyfriend?

And, my earlier post, what were those boys doing in that Garden?
And what about the affair that David and Jonathan shared in much of I and II Samuel? If homosexuality or bisexuality is inherited, that would explain Jesus descent from David, no?  wink

Read Gen 22:11-19. You have to keep reading to get the point of the verse, or start reading before the verse in question. Dont just pull out a verse and sry foul, it gives you no credibility.

Once again you take something out of the Bible and misconstrue it to mnake it seem like something else was going on. Throuhgout those books there was never any mention of homosexuality. If you find it let me know.

You know, Megiddo, when you first showed up here at SEB, I assumed that you were an honest and sincere (though misguided) believer who was curious about how a bunch of atheists and non-Christians went about their daily lives. Since then, however, you’ve made it increasingly evident that you are a pretty poor excuse for a person, and clearly not a good Christian.

You also have some monumentally skewed thought processes. For example, you harbor the delusion that my boyfriend is gay simply because he occasionally enjoys anal sex. By your logic, I should likewise be a lesbian (or are you one of those fundies who applies different standards for male and female homosexuals?).

Long story short, I think you are just a troll. I doubt that you truly believe half of the bullshit coming from your keyboard. Comments such as this confirm this:

First of all, Sadie is no lady as proven with her discription of her homosexual boyfriends escapades in her above posts. Second of all, dude, when you threaten physical violence over the internet, it just makes you look like big fat, porno watching, lardbutt, that couldnt move quick enough to get out of his own way.

Then you have the audacity to say this:

Dont just pull out a verse and sry foul, it gives you no credibility.

You’re telling one of us that lack credibility? You are simply not for real. I don’t think anybody could be that stupid--granted, your typing skills and general grammar don’t indicate an extremely educated person, but I still don’t believe that anyone could be as dense as you.

KPG: I’m starting to think this guy has latency issues, all he ever thinks about is homosexuality.

Yeah, really! Meg, you have been frothing at the mouth ever since I told you about John’s sexual habits. Is that what finally sent you over the edge all those posts ago? Just come out and say that you want to fuck my boyfriend, for Christ’s sake! That, or stop bringing him up at inappropriate times. Doing so makes simply you look obsessive. Let it go.

Whoa!  No need to get violent, everyone.  Fundies are infected by a pernicious meme, but we’re innoculated, so there’s no real danger of contagion.  Our antibodies will protect us, so there’s no need to throw rocks at people whose reason has been compromised.  Mudpies will suffice…

Megiddo- if you come here throwing around labels and presumptions, you’re going to get jumped on.  We’ve heard exactly the same drive-by evangelizing spiel too many times to react politely anymore, and bigotry will get you nowhere fast.  But if you are civil and reasonable, and if you have something original to say, you will be welcome here.

Now Sadie, give him the benefit of the doubt.  I think he really is that stupid.

It’s quite obvious you didn’t get my point, Megiddo.  What’s not quite so obvious is that God destroyed those two cities because of homosexuality. There are other, quite supportable reads on that story.

As for why I bring it up, the Bible makes a rather lopsided emphasis toward the concerns of the poor and downtrodden.  When Jesus wanted to summarize it all in a couple sentences, what did he say?  He quoted Micah 6:8; “He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly, and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

The Son ‘O God comes down to set the record straight, and that’s what he says?  Where was all that yammer about homosexuality?  About abortion? About video games?

Scriptural emphasis is pretty clear, but when we had a president who tried pretty hard to mirror the concerns of the Bible, he became the object of derision and scorn from the ‘Christian right’.  I really think they would have crucified him if they could have.

Sodom and Gomorrah were overrun with homosexuality, God said, no more. Debate that all you want. Look at hurricxane katrina. N.O. was ruined because of that and one of the biggest gay festivals was going to take place a week after Katrina hit but was cancelled. God is punishing us right now and if we dont repent, we will go to hell. Simple as that.

For a supposed God of supposed love there sure is a lot of hate in God’s followers. Say, does this mean that God hates black and poor people too? Why don’t you just hijack a plane with a boxcutter and show us how Jesus REALLY feels?

Wow, I take a weekend away from the computer and all hell breaks loose. There must be over 300 comments in my inbox. I’ll never get caught up at this rate.

I have to admit that I’m very amused by Megiddo’s comments. He/she is quickly becoming a one-person argument in favor of atheism. Arrogance, ignorance, hubris, and bigotry all in one small package brought to you by the wonderful religion of Christianity!

I’m not arrogant I just know what is true and what is not. I dont hate anyone, but I am definitely not one to not speak out against homosexuality in fear of “offending a homosexual”. Just look at the world around you guys. You dont think this place is full of evil? You dont think God has something coming for those who dont repent of their sins? Thatsa dangerous attitude to have.

Oh come on Megidda.  All I can say, is that if God sent Katrina to punish homosexuals, He has really bad aim, since he got lots more heteros, not to mention all the fundamentalist Christians who also perished.  Or maybe they were at fault for being too tolerant of the vipers in their midst.  In any case, this is comic book level reasoning.

Just an aside, Megiddo, but have you ever seen American Beauty? Because you remind me of one of the characters.

Do I get a prize for guessing which one, DoF?  Great movie, btw.

Well, there’s something we agree on, Megiddo; that the world is full of evil.  Most of it seems to be coming from the ‘God told me’ corner.  Jesus preached a number of sermons about religious hypocrites and their judgmentalism, but it was apparently all for naught.

New Orleans may have been a punishment for bad city management, or on a larger scale for the carbon dioxide emissions of our civilization.  But queerity?  I can think of some Euro cities that should have been flattened by a comet by now if that were the case.

No, you’re arrogant. You prove this in the assumptions you toss around here which you think to be true, but which aren’t. It’s pretty self-evident to everyone here and nothing you’ve done so far contradicts it.

As for the world being full of evil, it really doesn’t seem all that worse than it ever has from where I’m standing. Looking back through history there are plenty of periods that I’d argue had much more evil running about than what I see in the world today. As for God, I don’t believe such an entity exists so, no, I don’t see anything coming from him anytime soon. What a stupid question to ask an atheist.
