BattleCry 2006: Recruiting Christian youth for a religious war tomorrow.

Go read the three columns submitted to Truthdig by Sunsara Taylor on her experiences attending the three day Christian evangelical youth movement known as BattleCry:

If you’ve been waiting to get alarmed until the Christian fascist movement started filling stadiums with young people and hyping them up to do battle in “God’s army,” wait no longer.

In recent weeks, BattleCry, a Christian fundamentalist youth movement, has attracted more than 25,000 people to mega-rally rock concerts in San Francisco and Detroit, and this weekend it plans to fill Wachovia Stadium in Philadelphia.

The leaders of BattleCry claim that their religion and values are under attack, but amid spectacular light shows, Hummers, Navy SEALs and military imagery on stage, it is BattleCry that has declared war on everyone else. Its leader, Ron Luce, insists: “This is war. And Jesus invites us to get into the action, telling us that the violent—the ‘forceful’ ones—will lay hold of the kingdom.”

Here’s page 2 and page 3 and I highly suggest you read them all. It’ll probably scare the shit out of you.

There is a definite attempt taking place by the Christian Evangelicals to get ‘em while their young and get them ready to literally shed blood in the fight to turn America into a theocracy. This is where we’re going to see the next round of domestic terrorism come forth and our President is fully behind the effort all the way:

This was the letter that opened the event. Its author was George W. Bush.  Yes, the president of the United States sent a letter of support, greeting, prayer and encouragement to the BattleCry event held at Wachovia Spectrum Stadium in Philadelphia on May 12. Immediately afterward, a preacher took the microphone and led the crowd in prayer. Among other things, he asked the attendees to “Thank God for giving us George Bush.”

On his cue, about 17,000 youths from upward of 2,000 churches across America and Canada directed their thanks heavenward in unison.

Throughout the three and a half hours of BattleCry’s first session, I thought of only one analogy that fit the experience: This must have been what it felt like to watch the Hitler Youth, filled with self-righteous pride, proclaim the supremacy of their beliefs and their willingness to shed blood for them.

You’d like to think this kind of shit can’t happen in America, but there’s no reason it can’t. Who’s to say that someday this country will be the one all the other countries are banding together to defeat? If these people have their way that day may come sooner than later.

L4T: I’m going to suggest that our shared value system comes from God

Didn’t we have an extended debate about this approximately two years ago, during which our earnest opponent finally lapsed into plagiarizing entire pages of CS Lewis?

Every once in a while, I go looking for that thread, but I think it’s buried so far in the archives at this point that it may never be seen again.

The advantage Man has is intelligence.

True, Hussar, but don’t knock our (non-couch potato) physical accomplishments.  Humans, alone of the apes, can swim pretty well- drop a chimp in water, and he promptly sinks and drowns.  And we can run pretty well, too.  Of course, horses can run faster.  But a (well trained) human can run down a horse in three days, and then decide whether to eat it or break it.

Our apartment, as of 2002, is officially rat-free!

Can’t beat that! Can I move in too, Sadie?

OK guys, seriously, I think the girl Sadie is using for an avatar is cute as hell too.

I have one word for you, Brock: latency.  kiss

Do you have a bed big enough for all four of us?

I could tell you a precautionary tale from my unbridled youth, KPG, but this is a family thread…

Say something like:
“Jesus, I admit I am a sinner, and I accept your sacrifice on the cross for my sins.
Of course, only God knows the sincerity of your statement.

Therein lies the problem, as I’m sure you realize, L4t.  I can say this (I just did), or think it, until the cows come home, but nothing is going to happen.  To say this sincerely would mean already believing that “sin” exists, which means believing in God.  And I am incapable of making that leap of faith into the abyss, because reason has me handcuffed to reality, on solid ground.  Fortunately, or unfortunately, science and rationality infected my brain before Jesus could get a foothold, and now I’m innoculated:  I now believe what rocks tell me, rather than books.  And the rocks say that the world is old, and that life evolved.  The Bible says otherwise.

Could God have been concocted by mortal humans?  Could Santa?  We are hardwired to seek the breast at birth.  As babies, we cry thousands of times, and thousands of times we are given to suck, by a giant, all-powerful entity.  How surprising is it that we, as adults, still seek a giant, all-powerful entity, who will grant us milk and honey after we die?

Nunyabiz starts his attack on 10 December 04 ... about halfway down mentioning:

Now unlike Christians which claim to have done so much research and have all found that the Bible is the inerrant word of god, they quite obviously have done no such thing, they have done nothing but brainwashed themselves into believing the Bible and nothing but Bible period, I on the other hand have in fact done a shitload of research for 30 years, I have read the Bible 3X cover to cover, first 2 times was prior to gaining knowledge of the Astrological origins of the Bible, the 1st 2 times it just made no sense to me at all, the way it was written, its structure, the context, the blatant errors, the myriad of contradictions all made no sense whatsoever, “Until I read it the 3rd time after realizing its astrological roots and that the main character (Jesus) is really an allegory for the SUN. Then it all added up and made perfect sense.
here is a very easy to follow step by step description to use as a guide. Just read and click “next there are 34 pages.

Nineteen days later the thread degenerates with Brother Mark Burton from Church website: http://www.truthofGod.com trying to mindfuck readers with his ‘thoughts’.

I’ve discovered that it all boils down to brain wiring: your brain is wired to worship magic or it isn’t, either it’s wired to utilize logic or it isn’t, either it’s analytical of myths or it isn’t.

I only ever fix tags, though. It’s fucking annoying to have the formatting bleed to subsequent posts just because tags are not balanced.

Does anyone here even know what goes on at a concert like that or is everyone just assuming things? Liberals like you dont seem to realize that they themselves are a huge group of people opposing God, but that is ok I guess right. I used to think Christianity was a bunch of crap until I woke up, swallowed my pride and realized that it was us humans that are messed up, not God. Unless people realize that we are sinful people with faults and weaknesses, and ask God for forgiveness and accept Jesus as their savior, they will go to hell Iand I sincerely dont want that to happen to people.

1 - Get your labels correct. While many atheists are liberal, some of us are conservative. The above quote should read

Atheists like you dont seem to realize that they themselves are a huge group of people opposing God

If you prefer to use a different word, heathen or some such is perfectly acceptable.

2 - We are not a huge group of people opposing god. God does not exist. We are a huge group of people opposing christians. There is a very big difference.

I think it’s a basic inability to deal with guilty feelings. If they can blow it off as a fundemental trait of the human race than they don’t have to cope with their own individual mistakes.

First of all, how do you know he doesnt exist? Second, it is a fundamental trait of the human race and we do cope with our sins. You dont. You embrace them and try to make it seem as though everything is ok knowmatter what you do. The “if it feels good do it” attitude is a self destructive attitude. It’s not self debasement. It’s realizing that there is something better waiting for us after we leave this sinful world.

First of all, how do you know he doesnt exist?

The same way i know that invisible purple fire-breathing goats dont exist. And I was talking about self-debasement. The existance or not of your imaginary friend is irrelevant.

Second, it is a fundamental trait of the human race and we do cope with our sins. You dont. You embrace them and try to make it seem as though everything is ok knowmatter what you do. The “if it feels good do it attitude is a self destructive attitude.

You make a lot of assumptions about my attitudes thoughts and actions for someone who does not know me. You are the one who claims he is messed up not me.

Logic and reason, something with which you are apparently unfamiliar.

Second, it is a fundamental trait of the human race and we do cope with our sins. You dont. You embrace them and try to make it seem as though everything is ok knowmatter what you do. The “if it feels good do it attitude is a self destructive attitude.

I wonder how many basic christian ideals you just violated with that paragraph.

By the way, I know of no one who subscribes to a “If it feels good, do it” philosophy. I do know many, myself included, who believe that “if it harms no one it’s okay”. So premarital sex is just fine, thank you, but stealing someone elses property is a bad thing.

Premarital sex is fine huh? doesnt harm anyone huh? What about the many people who have sex, end up either having a baby or an abortion because they cant pay for a child or are too immature for a child. Taxpayers pay for that kind of stuff all the time and how many single moms are out there raising a kid without a dad because he was too much of a bonehead to man up take care of the child that he brought into this world. Where do you get your belief system, it is very flawed.

Megiddo: The “if it feels good do it attitude is a self destructive attitude.

That depends on what you are talking about. If you are talking about intravenously injecting herion into your body, you would be correct. If you are talking about engaging in safe, casual sex or occasionally partaking of marijuana, you would be incorrect. Like KPG, I suscribe to a “If it feels good, AND it harms neither myself nor anyone else, do it” philosophy.

What do you believe in then?

Quite a bit, including the intrinsic value of the Earth. My spiritual views lean towards Paganism.

Megiddo chides: Premarital sex is fine huh? doesnt harm anyone huh?

It’s actually *better* than fine.  mmm hmmm.

Jesus said you should SHUT UP and take care of them - ALL of them.  The poor and the downtrodden and the sick and hungry.  So SHUT UP and take care of them.  “Jesus said” and stuff.

And try to do it JOYFULLY, willya?  Your whining about all the things he wants you to do (feed and clothe the sick and hungry, etc) is starting to really bother God.

Where do you get your belief system, it is very flawed.

Wow! You come here, not knowing ANYONE personally, and define every single person’s belief system in a way that makes *your* belief system look superior - who didn’t see THAT coming?
