Atheist dressed as devil brings out the worst in “Passion” viewers.

SEB Public Service Announcement of the Day: If you’re going to see The Passion of the Christ don’t dress up as the Devil to see how the Christians will react. They won’t react well despite all that ‘love and mercy’ crap they’re always claiming their religion is all about.

Hoosier Gazette

“I always like to push the limits,” Wendell said.  Many were upset that Wendell chose to wear a devil costume to a religious movie.  Many patrons jeered Wendell as he stood in line for concessions.

Once inside the movie, Christians began pelting Wendell with Gummy Bears, Ju-Ju Bees, and popcorn.  Management got involved after a 75-year-old woman, Hazel Meyer, poured a 64-ounce Coca-Cola on Wendell.

Tim Tolbert, General Manager of Kerasotes Stadium 16, asked Wendell to leave because he was such a disruptive presence.  “Our corporate policy is to eject anyone that interferes with the movie experience of fellow patrons,” Tolbert said.

Ingrid Holzappel, a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, was outraged.  “This is no place for this type of behavior,” Holzappel remarked, “This was already a sensitive subject, and then to mock it by dressing up as Satan is despicable.”
...
Wendell, an atheist, said, “If God really existed, He would have struck me down for dressing as the devil.” He also wanted to prove “that Christians aren’t as forgiving as they portray”.  Wendell says his actions were also partially due to a genuine dislike of Mel Gibson.

Tolbert replied that Wendell was “a misguided and deranged person.” Tolbert also said measures are being taken to ensure this type of disruption does not occur again.  “From now on, people dressed offensively will not be allowed to enter the theatre.” Kerasotes’ management is in the process of creating new guidelines for preventing people dressed as “evil beings” from gaining entrance to the theatre.

Well, I suppose geeks will no longer be able to show up to viewings of Star Wars dressed as Darth Vader or a Storm Trooper then, eh? On the plus side, at least no one offered to pray for him.

There’s a part of me that finds this highly amusing and a part of me that thinks he should just leave these poor people alone to their delusions. It doesn’t take such a silly stunt to show how intolerant a lot of Christians can be. Just pick a newspaper.

Update: Thanks to alert reader Aaron it now appears this is a work of satire by a couple of guys who are probably having a pretty good laugh over it right now.  It’s a well done piece and certainly did a good job of stirring things up, especially around here. grin

This story is amusing and very sad. The part that bothers me though is not so much the intolerance of the christian patrons but that the movie theater will now decide who is dressed offensively.
How will they determine what is offensive and what is not? Will it simply be costumes they don’t allow or will be it shirts with writing on it? Buttons attached to shirts? I mean, how will they set a criteria as to what is offensive and what is not? Maybe it’s just devil costumes.
Maybe we could get away with those shirts that say we survived the passion and all we got was a lousy t shirt. wink

les,,,thanks for the story...i will be on the look-out for atheist dressed up in devils on wednesday, that is when our church is going to the movie as a group.  i will take my big bible, cross necklace, wwjd braclet, and anointing oil just in case…

most of the christians in our church are fairly new. so if we did run into a devil there are probably a couple from our group that might “lay hands on him.”

I say, let he who is without sin cast the first JuJuBee.

(thanks to Steve for that one!)

This is the funniest thing I’ve read in ages-- I love that the kid was “partially motivated by a genuine dislike of Mel Gibson.” Man, I feel the EXACT same way about Ben Affleck!!  The folks at the ‘Pearl Harbor’ screening were nice enough, but the lady behind me made me take my goat horns off.

The no-theater-patrons-dressed-as-evil-being policy is just so… dada!  I keep getting this ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show” image in my head, crowds milling around dressed as thier favorite pharisees, roman soldiers, apostles, repeating thier favorite lines (in aramaic, of course...) Okay, I just have to stop now....

Thanks Les!

I’m getting so sick and tired of turning on my TV and seeing Jesus this, and Passion that. This movie is like a rash. With that said, that fucking story makes my day. This Wendel knows what’s funny, and certainly knows how to get a reaction out of the Christian community.
I can’t wait for the spoofs and variety show skits to start hitting the air, and start punishing this movie. Fucking Jesus...get off my TV!

Doesn’t seem fair that the devil was the one kicked out if the other movie goers were the ones throwing things at him… but I’m sure he expected as much.  Funny story.

Run simultaneous screenings of “Rocky Horror” and “The Passion” on screens next to each other.  Talk about a train wreck about to happen.

Sorry, couldn’t help it…

This reminds me of that guy who wanted “under God” removed from the pledge.  I’ve always thought the same thing about the hipocritical actions of people claiming to be Christians.  But as you know, it’s not limited to religion.  That’s just society in general.  They say one thing and do another.  Life is so much more righteous when it’s handled with personal convenience.

Ragman, the last time I took your suggestion, I wrote a long ass piece about Bush reluctantly agreeing to appoint a panel to look into the Janet Jackson career extender main show of the Super Bowl.

If I do watch Rocky Horror and The Passion together, I’ll likely implode or consequently want to be a cross dressing Messiah. Either way, nothing good can come of it.

Nobody does violence like Christians, Tish. Even The Exorcist was a Disney romp compared to “The Passion of the Christ”

Too funny!!! It highlights the Right’s seeming preference of form over function. Bush is free to attack any country, void any treaty, ignore any scientific evidence, behave in any manner he wants simply because he says, “Suh-Weet Gee-Zus!” on sunday mornings..... I could make a killing on these people. But I’m too busy exploiting New-Agers.......

On second thought… ...should have “Rocky Horror” and “Passion” timed to END simultaneously.  That way everybody’s worked up when they walk out of the theatre together.

Sorry Brock…

Randall, you keep implying that someone here has said something that amounts to “Christians are the only people who are arrogant and judgemental” and I’ve been searching to see just who it was that said it and what thread that was in. Care to enlighten me?

I don’t think anyone here is making that claim nor do I think anyone here seriously expects Christians to not be arrogant, judemental and etc. from time to time. They are, after all, humans like the rest of us. However, Christians do spend a lot of time decrying these traits in others all the while claiming their religion promotes the opposite behavior in its followers. A lot of noise is made about unconditional love and tolerance and compassion as though this is common among Christians in general, but it seems this behavior among Christians is often the exception rather than the rule resulting in some rather blantant hypocrisy at times. If you’re going (as a group) to lay claim to having a morally superior viewpoint it would help if most of you actually tried to live up to it.

Your reply here takes on an almost smug tone as though you’re somehow holding a mirror up to the rest of us, the problem is you could do with a good look into that mirror as much as anyone else could.

I thought for sure it was going to be Normal Bob Smith!

I’m SOOOOO tempted to talk one of my special effects artist friends into dressing up as Jesus, bloodied, flayed skin and all, and going to a showing of “The Passion.” Probably wouldn’t cause much of a ruckus here in Hollywood though…

the reply my myself above was not meant to be smug, i was actually just trying to be funny.  i guess i failed at that.  i am not trying to make a point that atheist believe only christians have the bad attributs noted above.  i am actually trying to state what you said.  that it is a human trait.  but it still seems to surprise atheists that Christians come across that way, just as it surprises christians that atheists do not live according to biblical morals.

if we all are judgemental, arrogant, smug etc. then why is that always the arguement??

the judgemental, intolerant thing seems always to get linked to my christianity…

the avg. christian answers a statement or opinion by an atheist by slinging an occasional,,, “your an abomination and going to hell.”

while the avg. atheist answers a christian statement by,,,"your judgemental, delusional and arrogant.”

if you are right les, then it does not matter.  people in this world atheist, muslim, christian are all destined to a life of non-existance.  meanwhile we all have our faults.  faults that are defined by others....

homosexual male...its ok for two men to have sex, oh but whatever you do dont throw a jujubee at someone in the theater.

atheist...i can think you are a poor delusional, intolerant, judgemental person,,,but whatever you do dont think i actually have an ounce of faith in my heart toward God, because thats just going to far in speaking to me like that.

politicians...hey i will say whatever i need to to get votes.

christians...i can totally break every commandment, say i believe in Jesus but not know or do what he says, not know my bible, not reach out to my neighbor, spread rumors about those in my church and still get to heaven because i go to church on sunday and i went to see the Passion of The Christ, but everyone else,,,Your doomed for hell!!!!!

Jesus...Forgive them father for they know not what they do....I am the Way, the Truth and the Life....Who do you say that I the Son of Man am?...Many will say unto me in that day, Lord Lord we did many wonderful works in your name, I will say depart, I never knew you.

ob,,,,

2 Corinthians 4:4
whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.

Romans 1:18 But God’s angry displeasure erupts as acts of human mistrust and wrongdoing and lying accumulate, as people try to put a shroud over truth. 19But the basic reality of God is plain enough. Open your eyes and there it is! 20By taking a long and thoughtful look at what God has created, people have always been able to see what their eyes as such can’t see: eternal power, for instance, and the mystery of his divine being. So nobody has a good excuse. 21What happened was this: People knew God perfectly well, but when they didn’t treat him like God, refusing to worship him, they trivialized themselves into silliness and confusion so that there was neither sense nor direction left in their lives. 22They pretended to know it all, but were illiterate regarding life. 23They traded the glory of God who holds the whole world in his hands for cheap figurines you can buy at any roadside stand.
24So God said, in effect, “If that’s what you want, that’s what you get.” It wasn’t long before they were living in a pigpen, smeared with filth, filthy inside and out. 25And all this because they traded the true God for a fake god, and worshiped the god they made instead of the God who made them--the God we bless, the God who blesses us. Oh, yes!
26Worse followed. Refusing to know God, they soon didn’t know how to be human either--women didn’t know how to be women, men didn’t know how to be men. 27Sexually confused, they abused and defiled one another, women with women, men with men--all lust, no love. And then they paid for it, oh, how they paid for it--emptied of God and love, godless and loveless wretches.
28Since they didn’t bother to acknowledge God, God quit bothering them and let them run loose. 29And then all hell broke loose: rampant evil, grabbing and grasping, vicious backstabbing. They made life hell on earth with their envy, wanton killing, bickering, and cheating. Look at them: mean-spirited, venomous, 30fork-tongued God-bashers. Bullies, swaggerers, insufferable windbags! They keep inventing new ways of wrecking lives. They ditch their parents when they get in the way. 31Stupid, slimy, cruel, cold-blooded. 32And it’s not as if they don’t know better. They know perfectly well they’re spitting in God’s face. And they don’t care--worse, they hand out prizes to those who do the worst things best!

ob,,,

your disdain for love itself (Jesus The Christ) is not surprising.  It is obvious that you are living proof of the accuracy of scripture…

John 15:18
“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you.

John 15:20 “A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also.

Way to push the Bible quotes on someone sick of hearing ”about Jesus that and Passion this” RANDALL.

randall, what Bible version are your quotes from. It’s usually expected that one will include that information so others can check the quotes.

This is what I mean about spreading hate. Just because you use scripture to hide behind, it doesn’t mean you aren’t a coward or a hypocrite.

I don’t think you’ve fooled a single person here into believing you’re a well intentioned guy. Ok, maybe David or brian believe this, but they’ll believe anything.

covie you too are proof of the power of scripture and are evidence of the anti-christ spirit in the earth today…

my intentions are good, and my intent to be on this site was to learn from unbelievers, atheist etc, and i am learning a lot.

brock,,,
if posting a scripture or two is spreading hate, then so be it.  “ob” decided to ridicule The Christ, my Saviour.

coward or hypocrite??  your opinion...there are many here that would agree with you....many that know me personally that would disagree.

as for “ob” or anyone else for that matter that wishes Jesus would go away, sorry, its only going to grow..
