And while we’re on the subject of Gov. Sarah Palin…

... I want to ask why the issue of her unmarried 17-year-old-daughter being pregnant is something that shouldn’t be discussed? When the announcement was made Sen. Obama himself said:

“I think people’s families are off-limits, and people’s children are especially off-limits.“

Doesn’t the GOP bill itself as the “party of values”? Isn’t Gov. Palin herself a staunch abstinence-only sex education endorser? Doesn’t the pregnancy of a minor child of one of the candidates represent a major failing of family values and abstinence-only education? Isn’t it a valid question to ask: If she cannot instill her much-hyped family values into her own child then why should we listen to anything she has to say on the subject?

It’s not that I give a damn that her daughter, Bristol, is pregnant at 17 as it is the simple fact that had this been a Democratic candidate the Republicans would be jumping all over it like a group of castaways fighting over the last drops of water on a desert island. It wouldn’t have been more than a few hours after the announcement before someone in the GOP would have a commercial airing in the swing states pointing at the “scandal” and using it as an illustration of how liberal values will be the downfall of America. Overall the reaction from the Religious Right has been the usual “we’re not perfect, just forgiven” bullshit they trot out whenever you point out that someone over there is being a hypocrite.

But us liberals; we’re the first to step up and try to play fair when shit like this happens and the conservatives are always so grateful when we do that. Doesn’t stop them from exploiting the hell out of any mistakes we make as an indication of how our values are corrupt, but they sure do appreciate it when we don’t do the same in reverse.

What DOF said. If anything I have the greatest sympathy for Bristol Palin. I can only imagine the pressure she’s under given the national spotlight shining on her mother at the moment. It would’ve been tough enough with her mom only being a Governor, but now that she’s a VP nominee? That’s gotta be rough.

This all devolves back to the age-old question: do the ends justify the means?  And as ever, there is no good answer.  My personal preference goes along with most of you: take the high road.  Bristol Palin doesn’t need any more grief, and if we want to educate the electorate (which is urgently necessary in a democracy- otherwise we have an idiocracy), and appeal to their best interests, we won’t do so by joining our opponents in the gutter.

What annoys me the most is that she’s a proud moose hunter.Where the fuck is the sport in hunting those things - it’s like shooting friggin’ cows FFS.
Some people just seem to like to kill things - great christian and presidential behavior there.

Some hunters just hunt moose for the racks.  I’d see pics of them trekking out with the racks, and I couldn’t help but think, “They left all that meat behind.“  Hey, I’m all for bagging a trophy animal, but it’s gonna get eaten, too.  I know the carcass will get eaten by scavengers, but hey, I still see it as wasteful.

As for Palin’s daughter, do we know if the pregnancy was accidental or intentional?  It seems to me that everyone is assuming it’s accidental.  Considering that Palin seems to have a bit of pull and not afraid to use it, is it just me, or does it seem that her daughter may be having a shotgun wedding?

I read (on Wired or DMN, I think) some details about the ethics thing with her ex brother-in-law.  Seems the BIL was being an ass about the divorce and custody of the kids with her sister, making threats to her family, etc.

When you consider the fact that until just recently his MySpace page said he didn’t want any kids, I’d hazard that, yes, it’s a shotgun wedding.

No Hussar, don’t ... say ... it
Must ... not ... must ... keep ... self ...control.

No can’t do it!

No wonder Palin likes the boy so much, so much in common.

Gahhh.

I’m sorry.

Frumpa- see my first post on the thread.  Wonder if she has a sister called Threepenny (“Thrupenny”).

Bet he feels a merchant now he’s going have a Otis and a famous trouble.  If he’d known he was going to have a teapot, he wouldn’t have been so James Dean for a Melvyn.  Least he isn’t ginger.

?
Ignoring the obvious foolishness of the remark, as I’m assuming its satirical, you will be please to know that was cockney rhyming slang, not Queens English. Give you a clue.

Otis = Otis Redding = Wedding.
Teapot Lid
Melvyn Bragg.
