A stapler that doesn’t use staples.

The gang over at Treehuger have an entry up about a clever new stapler:

If a stapler doesn’t use staples, then shouldn’t it be called a stapless? Or maybe an unstaple? We’ll leave that one to the linguists, but for the time being, we’ll refer to it as the manufacturers do, as a “staple-less stapler.” Instead of using the tiny pieces of metal that add up to lots of waste, this ingenious little device joins your papers by punching a small, neat hole in your documents and folding the remaining flaps together for a secure binding. No paper is torn off of your sheets and there’s nothing to toss out or pry apart with your fingernails. So simple, but so smart. We’re sure even Milton would give up his red Swingline for this. $5.95 ::ShiptheWeb.com

Gotta admit, that’s pretty cool. I’m curious how well documents secured in this fashion tend to hold up or what kind of limit on the number of pages it has, but it’d still make a fascinating conversation piece even if it’s functionality is somewhat limited.

I sometimes get papers handed in that have been “stapled” with one of these things. It only works at all for a few pages, and even then they aren’t that effective.

My cynical side suspected as much, but I have to admit that it’s still pretty cool in that uselessly-clever way some things are. Don’t know that I’d spend $6 on one if it doesn’t work too well, but I’d probably be amused for at least a couple of hours as I went around seeing how many different things I could staple with it.

Yeah, it doesn’t take much to make me happy at times.

I can do mine for free--it’s called dogearing them and then tearing a portion from the center of the dogear and folding it over. It looks sloppy but fuck it it works.

You know, I had one of these years ago. A nice brass one. This was in the early 80’s. It cut two slots and a little tab. It then wove the tab through the slots it made. It worked great for 3 or 4 sheets.
