A call for calm after the election storm.

I’d like to ask everyone who’s upset over Bush winning re-election to pause for a moment, take a deep breath, and just try to relax. For the past 24 hours or so far too many Liberals have been running around as though hot nuclear death were raining down from the sky and they only had minutes remaining to be someplace else very far away. More than a few people have emphatically stated their intentions to move to another country and I’m sure more than a few of you are deadly serious about it. Quite a few others are wasting energy on being angry, depressed, worried, bitter, melancholy, or what have you and often times more than one of those emotions at once. In short, a lot of us are being not just reactionary, but over-reactionary to this development. Yes, I think a lot of us are overreacting and not thinking this through with a clear head like we should be.

For starters, nothing has really changed yet. America didn’t suddenly become a theocracy when Kerry called Bush and conceded. None of Bush’s goals in his agenda suddenly became a foregone conclusion with his reelection. The Bill of Rights wasn’t set alight and outlawed the moment Bush gave his victory speech. But you might think all of those things had happened if you were to judge us simply by how we’ve reacted. The truth is America still has a long way to go before our worst fears become reality and the worst thing we could do that would help ensure those fears come to pass is to throw our hands up in frustration or flee like scared rabbits.

Let’s address the option some folks are considering of moving out of the country. Canada seems to be a popular choice for a lot of folks who are seriously considering leaving mainly due to its more left-leaning government and populace. Canada is certainly willing to take you on, but you’ll have to get in line with everyone else who’s trying to move there from other countries. Word has it that legal immigration to Canada can take upwards of a year and then it’s another three years before you can become a full citizen. You could move in ahead of schedule if you manage to land a job there first and that’ll require a work permit, which is still a good four to six months in the future if you apply today. As long as you’re waiting you may as well ask yourself a few questions starting with, ‘Do I really think this means I’m leaving the problems in America behind?’ Consider that for a moment: For better or worse, America is the most powerful nation on the planet. If we were all to give up and abandon ship leaving the country to the right-wingers to do with as they please, how long do you think it would be before you once again started to feel the impact of that decision? If the Dominionists succeed in their goal of reshaping America into a true “Christian Nation” as they envision it, do you really think they’re going to be happy with that and leave the rest of the world alone? We’ve already read about how their goal is, quite literally, world domination. Imagine an America reshaped and run by these people. Do you honestly think you’d be safe anywhere on the planet with them in control back here?

For those of you who are busy panicking over this development you should be asking yourself, ‘How does this help the situation?’ The short answer is: It doesn’t. At best it’s a waste of energy and at worst it confirms everything the opposition believes is true about us. It also tends to feed on itself as it’s difficult to think clearly when you’re busy overreacting and we end up falling back on some of the very tendencies we take Conservatives to task for such as black and white thinking. Caught up in our own emotions we resort to knee-jerk reactions and lose sight of some very important facts.

For example, take a look at this USA Today map that breaks down how each county in each state voted into either Red of Blue. If you’re a Liberal then you probably find the sight of that map a bit depressing, but does it really say anything other than a particular county was won by one side or the other? No, it’s a simple binary depiction that gives you no indication how close the race in any particular county might have been and if you do some searching you’ll probably find that the race in many areas was very close.

Consider Oakland County, Michigan where Kerry got 319,607 votes and Bush got 316,567 making for a 50% to 49% win for Kerry with a mere 3040 votes difference. Now contrast that with Alpena County, Michigan where Bush scored 7,665 votes to Kerry’s 7,406 making for another 50% to 49% win for the other side with only 259 votes separating them. More importantly take a look at Michigan as a whole in that CNN county-by-county breakdown that colors the counties based on how strongly they allied with one side or the other. By my count there were at least 16 counties that were so close as to not show a hint of either red or blue and there were only a handful of counties that could be considered to be strongly on one side or the other. Looking at the other states you’ll find a couple that were mostly blue-tinted such as Massachusetts and a couple that were mostly red-tinted such as Oklahoma, but in a lot of them you’ll find that there’s an awful lot of white counties where it could easily have gone either way and even more counties where support one way or the other was just barely enough to give the state any tint at all.  If we were to apply this graduated concept to a map of how the states voted you might end up with a map like this one over at BoingBoing.net which has an awful lot of purple on it.

That’s the effect of those moderates we keep forgetting about that make up a good portion of the population. People like ***Dave who tend to lean liberal, but still has some consevative aspects to his nature as well. I think ***Dave is a good representative of the moderate viewpoint in part because of his entries dealing with his struggle to decide which candidate he was going to vote for. I take comfort in the fact that when I look at those maps that provide a graduated scale showing how strong one county or another happened to be for either side that the majority of them could be open to persuasion and a well reasoned argument to go the other way next time.

It’s important in times like this that we are level-headed enough to look for what the reality is as opposed to what we fear it might be. Just as the majority of Christians aren’t far-right Fundamentalist assholes, not everyone who voted for Bush is a die-hard Conservative who is beyond all reasoning with. It’s easy to forget this because we generally tend to get into arguments with the folks who ARE those things as opposed to the moderates. It’s also important to remember that we argue with them not because we foolishly think we’ll change their minds, but because we’re hoping our reasoning will resonate with the folks who are open to considering other viewpoints. If we just throw up our hands in frustration and feel sorry for ourselves, though, then we will end up with a self-fulfilling prophecy. We can sit around and pout and point fingers at what age groups we had pinned our hopes on that didn’t show up or how 51% of the nation must be clueless morons or any of a dozen other excuses we can dream up. Or we can take a deep breath, take a critically honest look at ourselves, our message, and our situation and then move forward determined not to let this setback crush our spirits. The only constant is change and even the darkest days eventually give way to better times.

I agree that the anti-gay issue is definitely important and needs to be combated, but I disagree that panicking is the right approach to take on it.

I mentioned before that having 11 states, including my own, pass amendments is bad, but not as bad as a national amendment would have been. The Republicans may try to revisit that issue now that they have a larger majority, but I still don’t think they have enough votes to get it through. As long as it stays at the state level there is always hope that a SCOTUS decision will render those amendments mute as it has with previous discriminatory state amendments.

The best thing we can do now is to continue to educate others on why these amendments are institutionalized discrimination and antithetical to the concepts of freedom and fairness this country supposedly embraces. We have to lay the foundation to build the effort to have these issues revisited in future elections in hopes of repealing them, but it’s going to take time and effort and a lot of persuasion along the way.

Ah Les...what would we do without our voice of reason.  Having, for most of my informed life, considered myself a moderate Republican (i.e. fairly liberal on most social issues), watching what has become of the GOP in the past 10-20 years has seriously disturbed me.  The call to moral arms and “god speaks only to us” mentality seriously scares the crap out of me.  But the real possibility of losing John Ashcroft is ray of hope.  Is there anybody worse they could replace him with?

Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell ...

Les, you’re right that there are things we can do and the legislation in the states is not the worst thing that can happen, but I still don’t feel like being reasonable about it.  It’s the equivalent of a theocratic-based miscegenation law, which is the worst thing to happen to our country in decades.

(With tongue planted frimly in cheek) . . .

I’d like to point out to Les that it may not be so difficult for Americans to move to Canada. Someone up here has created:

http://www.marryanamerican.ca

So, when the big old Draft somes down (sorry, I mean “selective service"), you might want to consider finding a Canadian willing to do the humanitarian thing and rescue you (or your sons, decrepitoldfool) from Bush’s/God’s great plan for America.

Seriously, though . . . the day dawned just fine, the world went on, and it may be that Bush will revert to type and retreat to his ranch to chop wood, play golf, or whatever he does down there. He may be happy just to coast out his second term. We can all hope.

IMPoe, I love that piece!

Paul Lutus is an absolute treasure.  His essays are fabulous, and my being employed as a web geek now is a direct result of my learning HTML using his Arachnophilia program many years ago.

The results of this election brought me to the very edge of the “black hole” of depression; but I can’t afford to fall in, so I’ve grabbed hold of the rage that will keep me above-ground, and will focus my energies on anything that can help keep this country from becoming the one Bush and the PNAC would like it to be.

We must take our country back from these Fascists and Pharisees.  I’d like to see it done by winning hearts and minds to “our” side, but if it came down to it, I’d have no problem with joining the People in an armed revolution.

As a conservative (OMG I might actually be called ‘radical’ by some), I have some questions that perhaps you good people might answer.

1. I keep hearing how Bush is a divider, and it is ever popular to repeat ‘uniter not a divider’.  While I agree the country is in many ways deeply divided, I cannot understand what logical person would come to the conclusion that the divisions are a product of a GWB presidency.  If I recall correctly, the 2000 election was split down the middle - partisan rancor abounded on both sides, people hated one another because of the results, etc etc - much like it is today.  While I’ll not attempt to make a case about whether GWB is a UNITER, I think it is rather hasty to say he is a ‘divider’.  The bottom line to me is, there are very important subjects to people in this country, and the opinions of the country on those opinions are split (almost in half).  GWB has taken a position on those very important subjects, and because he does not favor a certain side, that side calls him a divider?  I am genuinely curious about this.  Please comment.

2. I have noticed GENUINE confusion on the parts of many democrats/progressives - they are genuinely confused as to WHY do so many people appear to support the president, how could a rational person vote for him, what is wrong with this country, etc etc.  I can say with absolute certainty that the people on the other side of the spectrum feel exactly the same way.  As a conservative, I simply am dumbfounded in many ways that almost half the country voted for John Kerry and what he stands for (although I have suspicions that a significant portion of the vote for Kerry/Edwards was really just an ‘anything but Bush’ vote).  While political pundits and blogs will extol the virtues of either side, I for one am very interested in bridging the gap, because as a country, we cannot continue with this kind of divisiveness (sp?) and expect to be great for any period of time.  After my initial victory jig (in another post, cannot remember what thread id it was), the enormity of the situtation really hit - there are 50M+ people in this country that are pissed off/disillusioned/devastated over the results - what kind of country is that?  While you guys don’t agree with my political/economic/social views, I am curious as to what realistic things can be done to unify this country.

3. Because this blog appears to be populated for the most part by middle-class folks, I have to ask this.  In light of the overwhelming factual error, distortions, etc, in Farenheit 9/11, do you guys/gals consider people like Michael Moore to be a genuine reflection of your party/views?  Do you consider Farenheit 9/11 to be useful/helpful to your cause?  I for one, am appalled (sp?) that a party as large and old as the democrats could possibly treat such people as Dennis K, Al Sharpton, etc as viable presidential candidates, stand them up in political debates in front of the country, and let them make fools of the party.  As much as GWB/Republicans may be to blame for your sadness, your own party is just as guilty - how many of you would have run things the same way the dems did for this election cycle?

I have a lot of other questions - because the reality of the situation is, as a republican I just REALLY don’t get you guys.  And i can see that you guys really don’t get us either.  Mebbe if I get constructive answers to these questions I’ll ask more.  Thx

Crazyrepublican, what Les said… those are great questions.  I’m on my lunch hour so will at least put in my 2 cents.

The bottom line to me is, there are very important subjects to people in this country, and the opinions of the country on those opinions are split (almost in half).  GWB has taken a position on those very important subjects, and because he does not favor a certain side, that side calls him a divider?  I am genuinely curious about this.  Please comment.

Uniter/Divider - Yes, the country was split down the middle in the last election as the excellent Clinton presidency had been hammered relentlessly for 8 years.  Bush promised then to bring us together.  But every step along the way he’s presented a stonewalling, “My way or the highway” attitude.  If he’s trying to be a uniter, he isn’t working very hard at it.  Now he says he has a “mandate” and “the will of the people behind my back” after a bitter election in which he won a small majority.

Some may call him a divider because he takes certain positions, but for me it’s just because he seems to ignore people who disagree with him.  Well, not entirely ignore - the transparent use of “wedge issues” to instill fear was effective but repugnant.

I totally agree with you and have also thought a lot about this - how is it that intelligent people come to such extremely different conclusions?  My comment of 11/04/04 above is an attempt to wrestle with that issue but I’m damned if I know what to do about it except what we’re doing right now… ask the question and try to understand.  If we can get enough people doing that maybe we can figure out how to ... “get along” and have a better country.

Dealing with honest extreme disagreement is not a “solved problem” in human relations.

Because this blog appears to be populated for the most part by middle-class folks, I have to ask this.

Not sure why that matters.

I’m not sure the factual errors or distortions in F/911 were all that overwhelming - more like the exaggerations of a political cartoon, which is how I saw the movie; as a 2-hour political cartoon.  (The scene of happy-happy pre-invasion Iraq was particularly overdone.)

But the F/911 movie is a different matter from letting Al Sharpton anywhere near a microphone.  The Democratic party suffers from the very diversity it is trying to celebrate.  There’s no way to tell Al Sharpton to sit down and shut the f*ck up without alienating his thousands of inexplicable followers.  Gays thought April in an election year would be a great time to press the issue of gay marriage and the Democratic party just went along with it.  The party just isn’t good at taking the long view or advocating any self-restraint.

The Republican party suffers from no such limitation.  Only one Republican rolled around on deck shooting cannonballs in every direction, but everyone’s used to steering around Alan Keyes.

I’m looking forward to what Les says about these questions.  Thanks for asking them.

What DOF said.

I do have to say that in one aspect GW has been a uniter:  he has united pretty much the whole world against us.  As DOF says, his “my way or the highway” attitude has been ruinous for diplomacy but very effective as a soundbite for people who want to hear a tough president talking.  In my view, our president should be trying hard to represent as much of the country as possible, and I don’t think he’s trying at all.  I think he’s trying to push an extreme right-wing agenda that’s only half-baked, and he’s only moderating it where it’s clear he won’t be able to get away with the full Monty.  He doesn’t represent me at ALL.

I would far rather have had Kerry, who did one courageous thing after another:  he survived combat, then came home to protest the war he had learned so much about.  He revealed some of the ugly things our country was doing in the name of that questionable war, even though it meant being branded as a traitor by the people he was accusing (whistleblowers everywhere do that).  He did go to Paris to reach out to the other side, and I would rather have a president who was willing to risk trying that.  That’s a lot riskier than parading around in a flight suit, for crying out loud.  Anyone can stand behind a fence and yell “bring it on.”

Kerry didn’t need to act macho.  Bush and Cheney, on the other hand, seem to need desperately to appear that way, cartoonishly so.  I think that kind of ridiculous testosterone posture is going to get us in really deep trouble.

I see the election as the triumph of surface over substance, and it saddens me.

Since when did it become a prerequisite to be intelligent to be a voter?  Last I checked, P-Diddy was running a “Vote or Die” campaign on MTV, which I wouldn’t exactly consider to be the largest gathering of able minds on television.

But then again, there’s television to consider as a whole - how was this whole election presented on television?  Was Bush’s sheer inadequacy in the first debate overlooked for the most part?  Did Moore’s lack of credibility automatically taint that of Kerry?  And then there’s the issue of the undecided voters - the morons who, after seeing all of this, couldn’t come up with a final decision for the surveys before the actual election.  I’m tempted to believe that a lot of people went out and voted for whoever “felt right” at the time, and I wouldn’t be surprised that with Bush’s disgusting, emotional shit-trap towards 9/11 that people were more easily swayed to support him.

The first thing that went through my mind on 9/11 (once I regained comprehension after the initial shock) was: Bush is going to use this to win in 2004.  I find it amazingly ignorant of the American people to buy that so readily, even after he sent us to a war on false pretenses that were openly EXPOSED to the public THROUGH the national media!

I agree with Geekmom and DOF - Bush is a divider because he doesn’t listen.  He didn’t listen to the U.N. when they refused to help him in Iraq.  He didn’t listen to the millions of protesters of the largest unified protest movement in history either.  I find it mildly amusing that you don’t try to define him as a uniter, because I can’t think of a single instance where he’s been that either.

I’m not panicking over the election (despite the fact that I’m nauseous because of it).  Neither would I ever leave the country over something so trivial as a presidential election.  What I am worried about now, however, are the terrorists, and the message we’re sending to the rest of the world - this man wrongfully attacked a sovereign nation, alienated us from our allies, and is imposing western culture on the middle east constantly in a transparent nationalistic effort to “control” it, and we approve of him for a second term.  I’m sure I’m not the only one in the world who wants to puke.

Where the hell have you been JoshMan? I hope you haven’t been cleaning up another ketchup bomb all this time.

Bush is revved up now somehow. I don’t see how an almost lost campaign gave him the sack to think he has the nation behind him, but he has “capitol” now and he’s going to use it. The question is: Is he going to buy bananas or apples with it?

[sarcasm] As for working with the world through the United Nations, our country isn’t about to do that anytime soon. We are the strongest most important nation on the planet. We’re too proud/deserving to allow a group of other nations to temper our decisions that affect other nations. The very idea is ludicrous! /sarcasm].

Again, let my add my take from the other side of the Atlantic:

1) He’s a polarizing person because his goals are very straight-forward. He doesn’t like compromising, he probably believes that is as bad much as conceding something.

In a politician in such a high place, I prefer someone who ‘muddles through’, solves problems without making everything a matter of highest importance. I’d rather have a politician whom most people ‘sorta agree’ with than one who is loved by one side and hated by the other.

2) You got me there. I know a lot of FACTS about the US, but I don’t really KNOW the US. Last tuesday showed me again. Maybe I should visit and stay a little. But not until after 2008 wink

3) I dislike Moore. I read one book of his, saw that he played rough and ready with facts and conclusions - not lying, but not really being fair either - and never touched anything of his again. But whats the matter - I’ll agree with the previous comments - both sides have enough of a fringe. And the fringe is always exciting, so it gets more airtime.

First of all you have got to look at the numbers and where they came from. Bush/Cheney 51% Kerry/Edwards 48%+ Other 1%-,

and the break down. LOOK OVER THE NUMBERS!

You will find that small town, gun owning, on the average uneducated white conservative, republicans, independents, who are married and religious, made up his whole whopping 51% of American Voters that brought us back to the mournful state we are in now. Yes 48%+ of the

American people are in morning still today after a bitter and hard fight for the presidency. If it was a fight to the death one would be dead and one would be close to it, comatose and would take four years of hospitalization to come out of it, but no. This is a fight that has not finished.

Bush is like a school yard bully and has not learned a lesson yet. The last two large addresses have been gloating, and statements have been made like we will do it with them or with out them. He talks about bridging the gap, but does nothing to prove goodwill. To gloat over a victory and spit on his opponent and his people the way it is been done proves his worth. Now he will drag his mob through his next four years of policy making which he has designed in a way that even his top advisers do not want to be apart of.

So, fellow Americans, stop thinking about suicide or moving abroad. Want to feel better? Eat a little crow, because it is darn sure a very little, then do something immediately, now, today. Figure out what you can do to help rescue the country. Four more years is not going to kill it. Even if the idiot runs us head long into more war, which seems to be one of his ways of building wealth for his billionaire friends, while the tax payer pays. Join something, call somewhere and offer to volunteer, find a politician you like at the local level and start helping him or her to move up. Push the dream along and the next time you run across a dumb hayseed on the campus or at school, don’t shut them out, God know, I know how it feels to be shut out. Do your own bridging toward the bank and on the shore that will do our country the most good.  Call them in and educate them, show them a computer and how they can learn. You have got to see it; They do!, and that is why they are so afraid! [ Today we are witnessing the transformation of a nation and its majority becoming a minority ]

Take the lead in lend a hand to the efforts that will break down walls and help the country recover from what it has done to itself. Don’t mourn, organize. Keep the faith and always point out the way. If you are a runner in a race, and a large truck comes by, you can see the finish line, but the truck dumps a bunch of garbage on you and you are now covered in garbage in the ditch. do you stop and die. NO! Dig out and keep up the fine fight for the finish.

I have posted this but it seems like it should be on this page. The exodus is a bad idea in my opinion and I agree with Less in this regard. I have never ran from a fight in my life. I do not plan to start now. This is the time to get really down for what you think is right. Not just for family, but for brothers and sisters for in humanity for all time. Our GW has the lowest IQ of any president (fact) since there has been that type of test availible. He leads those that do not think but act. Cause and effect will be his demise. But if no one is trere to show the emperor’s nakedness then the failure will be our own.

Then again, this division looks pretty good to me…

The one major problem I have with the United States of Canada/Jesusland images (as humourous as they are) is that West Michigan ends up with Canada. West Michigan is Jesusland territory, period. I can’t even walk into the local comic shop without the store’s owner giving me a nice wonderful “you are going to hell” Jack Chick tract. The guy makes his living selling comics with “half naked women” in them and Dungeons and Dragons & other RPG stuff, yet he sees no problems with giving out chick tracts to customers even though Chick would say I’m going to hell for purchasing this guy’s merchandise!

Spocko, those “secede to Canada” maps are part of the problem. Give it a rest, please.

Les, if I understood you correctly you’re looking for a cross between the Boing Boing “purple” map and the USA Today county map. Here you go.

So your anger would cause you to wash your hands of those that are on your side, and you would leave your fellow man who fight for what is right in the middle of a battle when the going gets rough? The wounded here are not dead. They will not quit because you left. They will just remember. Do you think that I like how things worked out and am not hurt by the ignorance of people who have given up what is right and wrong for what they think is moral. To place there morals on me when I live by a code that they could not begin to comprehend. Love is not pushing your thinking on others. Love allows for thinking, and values when others do. Just short of half of the nation did good. I can not wash my hands of them because of the rest or I would be on my way to Romaina where I could make films with a lot less trouble. No I will stay and fight.
