I was wondering why SEB seemed slow this morning and now I know. All of the sites I maintain were getting hammered with trackback spam attempts most of which were blocked save for one URL that wasn’t in my blacklist yet. That one managed to spit out 200 spams into the various blogs here before I got it added into the blacklist.
It’s getting to the point where I’m just about ready to chuck trackbacks altogether.

Yep same here - pretty much every morning I wake up I need to clear out the trackback spams that get trough the blacklist. The whole idea never really took off the way it should have - I love the idea - so I have a feeling it won’t last this onslaught.
I don’t plan on using trackbacks again.
If I uninstall the trackback module from EE, will it cause any other problems, and will it put a sudden stop to trackback spam?
I don’t think it would cause any problems. Of course, you’ll have to do more than just uninstall the module. You’ll want to edit all your blog configs and set “allow trackbacks in this weblog” and “add trackback auto-discovery code to your pages” to “no” and then edit your templates to remove any trackback tags they might contain.
If there’s no trackback codes in your site and the module is uninstalled then there’s nothing for the trackback spammers to spam which eliminates the spam.

Someone hit my blogs, too - trackback attempts, referrs, you name it. Most were subdomains off of the same URL, but different IPs.

Hmmm. Nothing got through to me, so far as I can tell. A lot of stuff blocked by MT-BL ("moderated"), a lot of comments blocked by not having a e-mail address, a number of things blocked by throttling, and a number of comments/trackbacks blocked by MT-DSBL for coming via an open proxy. But nothing through.
On the other hand, it does seem like nearly nobody is trackback pinging any more.
