Not that Christianity doesn’t have its share of passages in its holy book with similar punishments for perceived crimes, but it sometimes seems as though a majority of Muslims still cling to such barbaric teachings. I suppose they deserve credit for sticking to what their religion teaches, but somehow I’d prefer they’d take the more hypocritical approach of the majority of Christians and just cherry pick the good parts of their religion.

It is not cherry picking or hypocritical. Christians do not follow Mosaic law. This is spelled out in the book of Acts. Jesus himself made it quite clear that Christians are not to go around stoning people. On the contrary, Christians who were violent in history were often the ones who were cherry picking, ignoring the relevant teachings of their religion.

I do not claim to know enough about Islam to say whether or not this person did something that is permissible in the religion. Hence I cannot claim to know whether the religion is at fault, and I will abstain from criticism. A pity that others cannot hold back from criticizing subjects they are not knowledgeable of.

Part of me thinks that this is yet another case of someone who is mentally ill using his religion as justification. It’s a bit like the African guy who tortured his sons because it said so in the bible, who incidentally got sent down for 9 years last week. He’s appealing - apparently it’s a big conspiracy by the ‘agencies’…

Islam is one of those religions that has me in two minds. On the one hand I know plenty of reasonable and moderate Muslims who wouldn’t dream of harming anyone, infidel or otherwise. And then you get nutjob terrorists and idiots like this.

But then you get Christians like Fred Phelps and Pat Robertson. I suppose it’s just a general thing you get with organised religion.

What is sad about this whole situation is that that girl will never have any justice. She will rot in a shallow grave while they go about their business, proud of what they did to boot. There is only one happy ending to this story to be had, and it is not the father being arrested. The only way is for his religiously nutty ass to die. I can’t say her brothers and uncles do not deserve that fate as well. It would be icing on the cake if the mother was the one to do it though.

I do not care about being tolerant of other peoples cultures when it comes to things like this. Fuck their culture five ways to Sunday if a thing like this is an acceptable and honorable part of it. Call me a crazy westerner but it seems to me that not killing your daughter (in the name of a magical fairy man living in the sky nonetheless) for talking to a foreigner should be a universal ideal to our species as a whole.

DaBroad, the wife has left and filed for divorce. She is currently in hiding as the husband and sons have made death threats against her as well:

He said his daughter’s ‘bad genes were passed on from her mother’. Rand’s mother, 41, remains in hiding after divorcing her husband in the immediate aftermath of the killing, living in fear of retribution from his family. She also still bears the scars of the severe beating he inflicted on her, breaking her arm in the process, when she told him she was going. ‘They cannot accept me leaving him. When I first left I went to a cousin’s home, but every day they were delivering notes to my door saying I was a prostitute and deserved the same death as Rand,’ she said.

‘She was killed by animals. Every night when go to bed I remember the face of Rand calling for help while her father and brothers ended her life,’ she said, tears streaming down her face.

[...] ‘Even now, I cannot believe my ex-husband was able to kill our daughter. He wasn’t a bad person. During our 24 years of marriage, he was never aggressive. But on that day, he was a different person.’

The mother is now trying to raise enough money to escape abroad. ‘I miss my two boys,’ she said. ‘But they have sent a message saying that I am wrong for defending Rand and that I should go back home and live like a blessed Muslim woman,’ said Leila, who is now volunteering with a local organisation campaigning for better protection for women in Basra.

Sadly this is not an isolated incident.

NeonCat, my initial reaction was the same and I had even typed as much into the original entry, but not every Muslim has allowed their religion to turn them into homicidal maniacs and I thought such a sentiment was unfair to those folks. I still think we should get the hell out, but I feel for some of the people we’d be leaving behind.

There are going to be those who will use this to argue that going into Iraq was the right thing to do and we should stay there until something like this is considered shocking by the people there.

I can’t argue that.  I just don’t think we can convince these people that girls aren’t property, that honor killings are horrific.

No, I read this, and my visceral reaction is that we should get the hell out of Iraq and let all the crazy Muslims kill each other if they want to.  Sooner or later the US will run out of patience, national will or money and leave, and they will do so.  Go ahead, call me defeatist, but Iraq was as secular and lawful as it was going to get when Saddam was in charge.  You can tell me the Iraqis are finally settling in to obeying their government, and I say they are just waiting for us to leave.

The sooner the better.

I have, although I appreciate that. My thing is, and remains, that I really just “don’t want that”.

I have concerns with how their “unique ID"s are generated that identify which owner is using these activations. If they’re using hardware profiling, I’m done at the door. If they’re not, I can use drive imaging to get around it.

I don’t like having to manually un-install stuff, especially where I might need to revert to a previous state on my PC, or I’m otherwise locked away from my drive.

Oh yeah. Tons. Like, a page full of problems just DRM- (and no-cd-crack-) related just today. So, no Bioshock for me*. Maybe I’ll convince my brother to lend me his Xbox in exchange for my PC for a while this summer.

Hell, in this day and age, you would think someone would google it.

Interestingly enough, there’s all this talk about how the Nazis were being very racist during the games. I’m sure some history teachers (if they ever got around to it) told their students that Hitler refused to shake the hand of Jesse Owens after he won four gold medals at the 1936 Olympics because he was black. Perhaps that’s true. But Jesse Owens did say that when he waved to Hitler from across the field, Hitler waved back. He didn’t get that much courtesy from his own white teammates, much less FDR. The President didn’t even send a congratulatory telegram, when at the time Presidents would invite medalists to the White House.

In fact, Owens even had to ride the freight elevator to a reception in his own honor at the Waldorf-Astoria because blacks weren’t allowed in the main elevators. This just after he’d had ordinary Germans asking for his autograph and being able to stay in the same hotel as whites, something that did not happen in this country at the time.

So, as it turns out, we here in the United States behaved in a more racist fashion than the white supremacist Nazis. That makes the guy in the picture a real dumbass, doesn’t it?

@***Dave: If only it had been.

@TheJynXeD:

Not to sound like I defend DRM (I don’t), but Maxis did say they only validate on the first play of a game, and then never again if you tell it not to go online. I can only hope they mean that, but they should probably know that a lot of geeks are going to be checking on them. Besides which, it’s not likely that people without internet connections are going to be playing - but I can imagine there would be a phone method for validating, like Micro$haft does.

Really, I don’t mind this form of DRM, as long as it never goes beyond this. Theoretically, it would be possible to deactivate the home-bound activation components with a patch if Maxis has to take down the servers. There are lots of other game companies who have used similar, if less sophisticated, methods that have been able to avoid this backlash. As it stands, it’s essentially a no-key version of what ID did with Quake III Arena.

And this is why I’d go and buy it, and just use the cracked .exe file. No stupid activation crap. Ever.

So, how do they plan on handling people without internet connections?

How do they plan on handling the various activation server downtime?

What do they plan on doing in two years when Mass Effect 2 and Spore 2 are released and the activation servers are changed to ME2 and Spore 2 servers?

They’ll have some very unhappy customers on their hands.

No they don’t use SecuROM as far as I know (except for Bioshock obviously). I just mean in the realm of DRM they tend to be somewhat less intrusive comparatively. You buy a product from them, go through the motions and for the most part that is that. Not to say I like their setup but I have some acceptance if I want to play certain games. The DRM spore was originally talking about was extremely out of hand. I could not rightly buy it. If it goes to market with that scheme, buying it is essentially giving credence to that sort of thing, and I just can’t no matter how much I would like to play it.

@Some Guy:

Uh, you do know what the purpose of Steam is, don’t you? The whole thing about Steam is that you purchase games online and download them immediately. They don’t want you to have to enter a license key - they just have you sign in to the same account you purchased the game with. They also don’t tie a particular user ID to an installation. You can still have as many installations of a game as you please, but you have to have a Steam ID to play.

The DRM Steam uses isn’t about preventing you from copying your game so much as it is making sure people who own the game are the ones playing it. That, and Steam only releases games that have come out in other media, so Steam is just a network distribution and play system. Steam is not nearly so draconian a system as SecuROM.

The faster these clowns go out of business, the better. It would be my ultimate dream if they would lock down their content so tight that only the purchaser could even hear (or see) it.

Then those of us who produce media for the sheer pleasure of it would suddenly find ourselves on a playing field without the several 800-lb gorillas that are the big media companies breathing our air and using our gravity.
