Posted on 08/27/2008 at 10:29 PMThat’s all Al Gore has.
Didn’t watch the video, did you Jay? I’ve read that website, and a passel of others like it. They’re a study in obfuscation. But whyyyy would someone do that, I wonder?
There’s something about the whole “Repent! The End Is NEAR!” hysterical tenor of the global warming enthusiasts’ cries of alarm that has a fishy smell to it.
Sure, that’s the way to evaluate scientific evidence. Just go with your gut, I always say. and speaking of fish…
Mankind isn’t the only species on Earth, we just act like it. Don’t worry, the world won’t end. But we can sure make it a lot less habitable.

That’s as much as Al Gore has.
Posted on 08/27/2008 at 09:51 PMI’m not convinced it’s a “proven fact”, but I think there’s enough evidence behind it to take it seriously.
Posted on 08/27/2008 at 09:22 PMUntil we find out exactly what created the universe, where the energy/matter came from and what the universe exists within we can’t do more than guess the actual age of the universe.
If “this universe” is what is occurring between the bang and the next crunch, then absolutely we can figure out the age of the universe.
The only problems I have with the collapse/crunch/bang cycle is that you’re still looking for where everything in the cycle came from (ie how the cycle began) and you’ve got the same questions you would have with just one big bang. It all comes down to one thing eventually, unless you want to throw out the idea of any big bang to start this universe (or this cycle) and go with some other form of universe creation.... one in which there is NO evidence for. So if you can’t accept the idea of one big bang and you have to entertain the notion of a cycling universe, then you can’t be satisfied with just one cycling universe. It has to be part of something else larger than that, which in turn has to be part of something else even bigger. You’ve also got the slight problem that the expansion of the universe is accelerating, implying there can’t be a cycle because this universe isn’t going to crunch. If you want to say that this universe can be traced back to the big bang and there was nothing ‘before’ it, that may be wrong, but it’s not foolish. It is simply where all the evidence we’ve got is currently pointing.

Hey, if you liked that site, maybe you’ll like this one.

Last Hussar -
Oh noes.. I hurt someone’s whittle feelings.
You take yourself so seriously. I’ve never seen someone stand up for Trampolines the way you have. Good job.
“Meet me in London”, “Sneer at a para-olympian”. Go take a nap you over-excitable git.
Tim Drake -
That’s nice, dear. Go join Hussar for a nap. And while you’re taking one, dream up a reason why table tennis was so popular in China, yet could barely fill the stands. Someone should tell them that it is extremely popular in other countries and they shouldn’t be acting so American toward it.
Funny, I make an offhand remark in jest at the ‘events’ from the shallow end of the Olympic pool and ruffled international feathers. You’re both so sensitive and pathetic. I thought sensitivity and political correctness was an American quality. Guess we don’t have it cornered.
- Matt
Matt,
Seriously. Stop talking. You’re just showing how ignorant you are.
I assure you that there are other places in the world besides the United States. I also assure you that these places play different sports than those played in the United States and I assure you that these sports are played with the same determination, perseverance and skill than those played in the United States.
Just because you don’t watch them, or you don’t like them, or you don’t think they’re “real sports” doesn’t make it so. Simply because they are not popular in your country does not mean that they are not popular in other countries. I, for example, don’t consider baseball a sport, nor American football necessary when games like rugby and Australian rules football exist, but I understand the concept that some people do consider these sad attempts at ‘athleticism’ (*snicker*) to be “sports”.
Badminton, handball and table tennis ARE awesome to watch, and many people outside your country DO watch them. Equestrian is not my cup of tea, but yes, I do consider it a worthwhile and competitive sport. Trampoline is a subdivision of gymnastics (in my opinion) and works at about the same level.
My suggestion to you would be to educate yourself about the world and cultures around you and to refrain from imparting your nescient point of view. As it stands, you are simply reinforcing the stereotype about Americans held by most everyone that doesn’t live south of the 49th.
Also, I would suggest trying some of the sports you mentioned yourself. Badminton is extremely fun and competitive and handball is equally awesome.
Posted on 08/27/2008 at 06:23 PMnone of the inmates files say they committed the murder under the influence of water.
A likely story, what with the ready availability of di-hydrogen monoxide even in restaurants and homes.
Posted on 08/27/2008 at 05:47 PMthat link just goes to Aylesbury gaol.
Yes. And none of the inmates files say they committed the murder under the influence of water.
Posted on 08/27/2008 at 05:45 PMI was actually reply to your comment “Special Olympics”, the implication that somehow these sport do not require the same level of commitment/skill/physical fitness as the ‘traditional’ sports.
This isn’t to say I think all events should be in the Olympics. I don’t think syncronised swimming is really an Olympic sport, however I would not sneer at the participants, having seen not just the skill, but pure body strength the competitors have- I certainly wouldn’t describe them as ‘special olympics’- what ever you mean by that. Possibly you mean the Para-olympics- why don’t you go and sneer at a para-olympian face to face.
It is strange when softball is looked at for removal
Well, given that there is only really one country where baseball/softball is played extensively, many of the 95% of the world population wonder why it was ever there in the first place
(usually dominated by the US)
Oh, may be that’s it.
Blow me.
That famous US wit and diplomacy at it’s finest.
Posted on 08/27/2008 at 05:14 PMSo, after the next collapse/crunch/bang cycle we may not have to put up with this kind of stupidity? Hey, I can dream, can’t I?
Well, I guess hanging out with them would be a good way to meet some hippie chicks and maybe get a good smoke connection.
If you are into that sort of thing, of course.
Natural gas is an easy conversion for most standard internal combustion engines. Not saying it is cheap, or without problems, but we have been running many dual-fuel vehicles, such as forklifts that run inside buildings, for many years. The reason for them is that their exhaust is cleaner.
Natural gas infrastructure is well established, we just need more “gas station” outlets. Converting cars and trucks to use natural gas will make a big dent, AND A QUICK DENT, in our burning of oil.
I would like to suggest everyone pay attention to the Pickens Plan, which is running TV ads now. This man knows what he is talking about.
Posted on 08/27/2008 at 04:20 PMDof, I’m in favor of legalizing marijuana too: that’s one of the easy ones. Sometimes I think the best solution would be to legalize everything, and put the money saved, and the tax collected, into education. But it’s hard to predict what would happen with harder drugs, such as crystal meth, if they were legalized. Would there be more abuse? If so, would the amount of misery caused balance out the amount of misery avoided? Impossible to say.
LH- for me, that link just goes to Aylesbury gaol. And yes, I was guilty of hyperbole: marijuana can certainly be implicated in death. So can water. The fact remains that marijuana is a great deal less dangerous than alcohol.
Posted on 08/27/2008 at 04:00 PMExactly. It would be foolish to think there has been only ONE cycle. You don’t get that kind of compression and energy release out of nowhere!
Until we find out exactly what created the universe, where the energy/matter came from and what the universe exists within we can’t do more than guess the actual age of the universe.
Who knows, it could have already done a few billion crunch/bang/expand/collapse cycles before we came along.
Posted on 08/27/2008 at 03:37 PMOk that makes sense. Unfortunately I have a bad habbit of tending to think in absolute black/white terms.
Posted on 08/27/2008 at 03:04 PMAnd as I mentioned before, vast amounts of natural gas are currently being wasted through flaring at oil wells (where it still produces co2. A process that can liquify the stuff on a small scale (say, at a well head) means the fuel can be used instead of wasted.
Posted on 08/27/2008 at 02:50 PMTwo things have been bothering me about this movie. First, of all the science-fiction books they had to choose that one. I mean, really? Really?
Then, when this movies fails, and it will, studios will proclaim that it’s because audiences don’t want to see science-fiction films. It’s a frustrating cycle.
Note: for the purpose of this discussion, I’m not distinguishing between sci-fi and SF.
Posted on 08/27/2008 at 02:20 PMFrom an environmental standpoint there’s a few advantages. While it still puts CO2 into the air it’s less than some other fossil fuels. It produces less carbon dioxide per unit of energy released. In that respect it’s “cleaner” than coal or oil, but not truly clean like solar power is. According to it’s Wikipedia entry:
[B]urning natural gas produces about 30% less carbon dioxide than burning petroleum and about 45% less than burning coal.
The other advantage is that there is a lot of natural gas out there at the moment. This makes it useful as a means of transitioning off other dirtier fossil fuels as we try to develop truly clean technologies.
Last Hussar -
I see, criticism requires accomplishment in the subject? Interesting.
Act like the 5 events I mentioned are interesting to watch. Just pretend. And then remember they are considering skimpy outfits for table tennis just to try and attract more viewers (works for beach volleyball). Yeah… The events exist in order to give other countries a chance at Gold because the US dominates the real events (only 1 gold in equestrian, go us)—and believe me, I’m not saying that out of pride for my countries’ achievements, I don’t care at all. Zero caring here.
It is strange when softball (usually dominated by the US) is looked at for removal and badminton and table tennis still exist as events.
But what I’m really trying to say is: Blow me.

Posted on 08/27/2008 at 01:43 PMAt the risk of sounding as ignorant as a politician:
I don’t get it. Natural gas isn’t any more renewable than liquid fossil fuel right? So whats the difference/advantage of using one over the other? I mean from an environmental standpoint?
Posted on 08/27/2008 at 01:28 PMOh my, that’s just painfully stupid. And no, you aren’t nitpicking. The main advantage of turning natural gas into a liquid fuel is that it gets used to do work formerly done by other liquid fuels… instead of burned into the air (wasted) at an oil well.
Posted on 08/27/2008 at 01:14 PMMarijuana is certainly not harmless - an impossible standard not even met by hot dogs (choking deaths). The point is a dispassionate weighing of the consequences of different options is needed. We don’t do that - our legislation runs toward reactive rather than analytical.
I prefer to prefix things with the word anal - but that doesn’t work well at all with fortune cookies.
Anal help I’m trapped in a fortune cookie factory

Posted on 08/27/2008 at 12:56 PMA simple test: anyone ever die of a marijuana overdose?
Yes
Just not the person who overdosed, but the innocent sap they murdered.
My office. I draw your attention to the last line- I have access to those files.
Posted on 08/27/2008 at 12:53 PMGo on then Matt- show us how easy they are. I’m only 30 miles north of London, I’ll meet you and your gold medals in 2012.
Protestution?
Posted on 08/27/2008 at 11:41 AMMeth is one of the main reasons I’m for legalization, since on of the best things about legalizing meth would be pushing meth production into factories as regulated industrial processes rather than any old junkie cooking up the crap in the closet of their single wide trailer.
If that happened I’d cheerfully call much of legalization a success no matter how many more junkies there were.
Posted on 08/27/2008 at 11:39 AMThe SimpleTest™ is a rubrick for legalizing certain drugs right away. The others will require a bit of analysis. For instance, what is the ratio of overdose deaths alcohol/CM? Which is socially acceptable or politically untenable? We have that discussion after legalizing the far less-dangerous drug.
Posted on 08/27/2008 at 11:33 AMA simple test: anyone ever die of a marijuana overdose?
No. Anyone ever die of an alcohol overdose? Happens every day. So should alcohol be outlawed?
There are no easy answers.
Posted on 08/27/2008 at 11:16 AMNot a difficult problem at all, Les. Make the severely dangerous drugs illegal (especially selling) and the less dangerous ones legal. A simple test: anyone ever die of a marijuana overdose? Now how about Crystal meth?
Posted on 08/27/2008 at 11:13 AMCrystal Meth is one of the drugs that make me doubt my conviction that drugs should be legalized. I still think they should be, but damn that one is a nasty problem.
Xian hell is where all the good people go

True, but learning disabilities can keep you from getting past that. I grew up hearing racism, and had I not the brains to figure it out for myself, I likely would have ended up racist myself.
Not to make an issue out of the lead paint, I wrote it more in humor than seriousness.
I really blame the meth - not for the racism, but for the attempt. That shit really screws people up.

Posted on 08/27/2008 at 09:16 AMThe last Olympic coverage I enjoyed watching was Eddie the Eagle. Since then, the only way you’ll get me to pay attention to this “sports” event is if I could pick and choose the raw footage to watch.

Sadly, racism ain’t dead. Still too many homes with lead paint on the walls.
