Yes! As promised, this past weekend saw ***Dave and I sitting down in front of our respective PCs and attempting to pontificate at length on various topics including many that you supplied us with. We talked politics touching on Mitt Romney’s apparent nomination, Paul Ryan’s general obnoxiousness, and David Barton’s twisting of history and how the Founding Fathers were not perfect beings who made no mistakes. We spoke of classical music and our short-lived time as musicians. We chattered on about how much the new movie The Avengers sucks. Endless erections caused by BMW motorcycles. The really bad sci-fi movie The Lawnmower Man. And we round out the conversation with discussing the movie trailers ***Dave saw before his viewing of The Avengers.

In all it’s an hour and 16 minutes of non-stop meandering where we manage to stay on topic… mostly. This is the original unedited recording. I had spent most of last night editing it up a bit, but on reviewing the work this evening I decided I didn’t like it. I wanted it to sound more like two guys having a conversation than a NPR-ish recording and so I decided to abandon the edits and I didn’t even bother trying to find music to put at the beginning. I’m not sure why, but this just felt better to me than all the usual edits and additions I have done in the past.

Plus, it was less work.

Blah blah blah...

So you may recall that last Sunday Dave, George, and I sat down to do a podcast. Which we did, about an hour later than I had intended seeing as I allowed myself to become engrossed in shooting bad guys and ended up being almost an hour late to my own podcast. Still, we got through it and had a good time and talked about Google Reader and how sad we all are at the removal of its testicles social features, we talked about Herman Cain and his current popularity with the Republican party with a little Sarah Palin and Ann Coulter thrown in for good measure, a little about Occupy Wall Street, there was some video game banter on how they may become the new medium for story telling, some love for Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, some kudos to Apple for being one of the few corporations that actually pay taxes in the U.S., and a whole lot of other stuff to boot. Plus the return of opening music that we hope we won’t get sued over.

This was a tougher than usual podcast in part because my brain just wasn’t working right at the time. Still, through the magic of two hours of audio editing I was able to clean up a lot of the long and awkward pauses and make us all sound coherent in thought and speech. Which was particularly important for me considering how much trouble I was having just putting sentences together.

No musical intro this time, but we kept it under an hour and a half and we cover a whole bunch of stuff ranging from alcoholic drinks, Rick Perry, why progressives should vote for Obama, and the tension between brick and mortar stores and online retailers. Plus tangents! So many tangents as is our habit to do. We may not be the most entertaining or informative podcast, but we’re certainly one of the widest in variation of topics.

It only took 11 months to get around to, but the fifth episode of the Stupid Evil Bastard Podcast is finally available for your listening enjoyment. In this installment we tackle a number of suggested topics and a shit load of tangents because that’s the way we do things around here (read: haphazard and poorly planned). Topics include Sarah Palin’s bus tour, the field of Republican presidential candidates and how Michelle Bachman makes all the rest actually look desirable in comparison, some disappointment in Obama, the Buddhist concept that there is no “self”, various TV shows we are watching at the moment, and a little something something on Patriotism in honor of the day we did the recording.

Or, more concisely, it’s an hour and a half of Dave and I rambling about all sorts of shit. Yes it’s another adventure in ADD discussions as ***Dave and I spend two hours intending to talk about one thing and wandering so far off topic that we needed a GPS to get back on track!I was really excited about this one as I felt like we had plenty to talk about this time out and boy did we. The range covered is wide and wandering as is our wont.

This time out we touch on the topics of Tipping (as in for a service, not cows) , Dr. Laura’s N-word rant and the subsequent squashing of her First Amendment rights, the N-word the C-word and the R-word, Sarah Palin’s defense of Dr. Laura and hypocrisy on the Right in general, the first ever SEB Weather Forecast for Denver and Detroit, Phil Plait’s “Don’t Be A Dick” talk and the on-going discussion in the atheist/skeptic blogosphere on how we should promote skepticism, dickishness in general and how everything we’ve talked about up to that point ties into the whole “don’t be a dick” discussion, how I’m occasionally an asshole, the South Carolina gas pump story, how ***Dave is irrational about his belief in God but that’s OK, and so very much more.

I honestly think that this is the best podcast we’ve done so far as even with as far-ranging as we manage to be we still ended up tying it all together in the end. At times it even sounds like we actually know what we’re doing. I even managed to find a bit of appropriate music for the opening!

We cover a number of topics starting with Podcasts and moving on to a question from Decrepit Old Fool that we talk about a lot, but never actually answer. That’s followed by tangents galore that are related to DOF’s question by only the thinest of hairs and then a little gushing over the fact that George reads our blogs and some discussion of our religions backgrounds, faith healing, and politics and how we should be the leaders of the world except that we’re too lazy. We close it out with a discussion of James Cameron’s blockbuster Avatar which may contain a couple of spoilers so you may want to stop listening at that point if you haven’t seen the movie.

The program I used to record this podcast stuck us in separate stereo channels so I’ll be in your left ear and Dave will be in your right if you wear headphones. This turned out to be a good thing in part because Dave’s audio was much quieter than mine and I spent a good part of the last couple of days learning how to use Audacity to try and bring his levels up without distorting the hell out of it. In the end I dropped my levels down to more closely match his so you can turn up the volume and hear us both a little better. It also took a little time to figure out what data rate to save it as to keep the quality up and the file size down. The final file is 56.7 MB in size and will occupy 1 hour and 22 minutes of your time.You can download it directly by clicking here or you can subscribe to the RSS feed here or you can listen to it at the bottom of this post with the built-in handy flash player. Right now it’s being hosted on SEB’s server so I’m hoping that we don’t suddenly kill our bandwidth allowance with it, but we’ll find out soon.

We had a lot of fun doing it and we hope you’ll be at least mildly amused by the results. If you like it then we’ll do more and try to get better at it both in terms of the quality of the recording and in the quality of our discussions. Let us know what you think in the comments.
