But it’s Eoin Colfer, man!

I don’t know anything about Eoin Colfer, but I do know I’m glad they didn’t pick one of those other authors who’s often compared to Adams. Terry Pratchett or someone. I’ve never been a fan of ANY of them. The only author whose prose ever compared was P.G. Wodehouse, and he’s dead, so…

Eoin Colfer is a great author, though he writes children’s books, I strongly feel that they are enjoyable for anyone (and he is certainly technically a very good writer).

Ahhhh, that changes things a little. I’d be interested in a comparison too.

AFAIK Adams wrote an early draft, but after he died they handed it to another writer, Karey Kirkpatrick, and I have no clue what he added but I would very much like to compare the two scripts.

IMO, the cast was mostly dead-on, many scenes from the book were done really well, and I’m cool with a lot of the changes.  However, they took a book that was anti-romantic, where one of the main premises was that Arthur Dent, lead character, was kind of a square and not the type that always gets the girl, and they made it into a love story.  Disappointing.

I don’t know if anyone here had read Douglas Adam’s “Salmon of Doubt,” but I found it extremely frustrating.  It’s a posthumous release and has a few instances of unfinished work.  You really get into the situation and it stops with no closure at all.  It does make me wonder though, if Adams had a plot or a loophole in mind for another Hitchhiker’s book that they might be using.

I’ll give it a chance, but I think I’d like a sequel better if all the characters weren’t killed already.  I kind of feel like, it’s finished, it’s got it’s closure, why mess with it?  If Adams died before finishing the series, that would be a different story.

Did you know it was Adams who penned the screenplay version of the recent film? (I didn’t until afterwards, and was quite suprised.) I still enjoyed it, but it’s not a patch on the other facets of the story.

If you’re ever stuck for something to read, I found Rob Grant’s “Incompetence” very good, and very Adamsesque without trying to to be. Set slightly in the future, it’s become illegal to discriminate on the grounds of competence to do a job… There were a few slapstick moments that I couldn’t get into, but meh, can’t have it all
