As for blasphemy laws, we still have plenty of those on the books here in the United States as well. One of the first entries I ever wrote talked about Michigan’s blasphemy laws.

I see no evidence of large numbers of people changing their habits.  A recent Pew poll found Global warming dead last among public priorities. As a society, we’re pretty much drivin’ the cars, ridin’ them jets, scarfing down the meat, throwing away the aluminum, and whining about start-up times on them fancy light bulbs.  Anti-environmental propaganda is hungrily devoured by a huge part of society.

Thanks Julian. I get that feeling myself a lot lately, former Reagan voter that I am.  Call me a newly-hatched liberal, (gradually starting about 7 years ago) thanks to what passes for ‘conservative’ these days.

Zilch, I agree with you on the speech laws.  Lawmakers seem like a humorless lot, opaque to the power of laughter to dismantle evil ideologies.  Sunlight is the best disinfectant.

Speaking as a member of a governmental bureaucracy, I’d like to point out that oversight, private and public, is the key to making any system work without (or at least significantly less) corruption.
